Jay Dziuba's Fundraising Success Story
Ottawa native, Jay Dziuba, found many innovative ways to reach her fundraising goals for the 2009 Weekend to End Breast Cancer: "Being creative is key!", states Jay.
"I wish my friends and family were in a position to donate big amounts," she explains, "but they’re not. That's when you have to get resourceful." Crafty by nature, Jay crocheted lip balm cozy keychains, asked a lampwork artist to make pink ribbon buttons, and even traded hats for donations.
Jay was able to sell a few products to her friends and family, but also used the Internet to reach more people. "This worked out great!" says Jay about her online fundraising efforts.
Jay also added in a link to her donation page in her personal email signature, "more awareness can't hurt. And it also helped me get some extra donations!”
Jay was full of ideas when it came to fundraising. "I asked my friends and family to save their empty bottles - which I referred to as Bottles for Boobs - and donated the money. My team also held a bake sale and hosted a fundraising barbeque."
"People are more than willing to help in different ways," Jay continues. "If they can't make a direct donation, they may be willing to prepare cookies for a bake sale, provide you with items for a garage sale, or even set aside their empty wine and beer bottles for you."
To participants who are struggling to meet their fundraising goals, Jay says: "Don't give up, and don't be afraid to ask. Start early, and get your friends to join you!"
"I just keep becoming more passionate about the walk and the fundraising" states Jay, who has already started fundraising for the 2010 Weekend to End Women’s Cancers.
"To be a part of this life-changing event is incredible, and definitely worth it," confesses Jay. "The journey you take to get there, the walk itself and the feeling you get looking back makes me want to do it all over again!"
